1. Introduction. Language as product vs. language as process.

1.1. Discourse varieties of English.

1.2. The role of cotext and the role of context.

1.3l. Conversation analysis (CA) and discourse analysis (DA).

 

2. Varieties of spoken English. Social and geographical aspects.

2.1. From Standard English (SE) to English as an International Language (EIL).

2.2. English as a First, Second and Foreign Language.

2.3. Generalities in English as a means for international communication.

 

3. English as a means for international communication in its oral dimension

3.1. Pronunciation.

3.2. The construction of meaning.

3.3. The construction of textual and grammatical structures.

3.4. Interaction in a meaningful context.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The subject is based on academic debates in the theoretically-oriented sessions and on the activities in the practically-oriented sessions. This will be completed by means of a virtual forum and an oral final presentation, carried out by the students individually or in groups (maximum of three students per group).

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Active attendance and participation, in the debates and practical sessions (50% of the final mark).

End-of-course presentation (40%).

Participation in the virtual forum (10%).

Assessment for students who cannot attend classes regularly can be negotiated with the theacher on an individual basis.
