1. Introduction: a. Drama & theatre. b. Icons, indexes & signs. c. Genre, carácter and speech. Reading: From Nieto (1997). 2. Medieval drama: a. Mateiral and historical conditions. b. Mysteries and moralities. Reading: from The Second Shepherds Play (from the Norton Anthology of English Literature, vol. 1). 3. Elizabethan and Jacobean drama: Merchant of Venice, by William Shakespeare. a. Elizabethan theatre: material conditions.. b. Public and national theatre and the construction of identities. c. Religion, economy and politics in early modern English theatre. Reading: Merchant of Venice, by William Shakespeare. 4. Victorian and late Victorian drama. a. The Victorian period: history, culture, ideology and society. b. The dialectic containment/subversion. Reading: The Importance of Being Ernest, by Oscar Wilde 5. Twentieth century drama. a. Symbolism and expressionism vs sentimental comedy. b. Absurdist theatre, Angry Young Men, kitchen-sink drama c. Contemporary theatre and ideological criticism. 4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

This course requires regular attendance and active participation. Lectures will demand students' comments, and there will be class presentations. Assigned readings will be discussed in class. There will be lectures, and theoretical and practical sessions, plyus specialized seminars and tutorials. Significant individual reading will be required, although all the assigned readings will be explianed and discussed in class.

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

There will be one final class essay (50% of the final grade), which will include: identification of excerpts from the assigned plays; one essay on one topic from a choice of two. Students will also be required to produce one individual paper, a 10 minute summary of which may have to be delivered in class (30%). Regular attendance and active participation will make up the remaining 20% of the final grade.
