4. OBJETIVOS DE LA ASIGNATURA

This course provides a logical follow on to the subject Inglés Instrumental Intermedio and provides a further step in expanding and developing not only the student’s knowledge of English, but also its practical application in a variety of different areas.

It aims to offer students intensive practice in the use of English, moving from an intermediate level (more or less equivalent to Cambridge First Certificate), which is a required level for this course, to one approaching Cambridge Advanced Level by the end of the first term. The second term follows on logically from the first and aims to bring students to a more advanced level through a variety of exercises and activities. These include oral and written expression, as well as listening and reading comprehension. Running parallel to this is the area of phonetics, which includes the sound system as well as stress, rhythm and intonation, which will be dealt with on an integral basis throughout the course.

Given the increasing lexical and grammatical complexity of the materials used and the variety of exercises typical of this level, as well as the amount of linguistic material to be studied, students will be given considerable practice in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in order to reach the target level. The ongoing exposure to a variety of materials suitable to this level of English should ensure success provided that the student has the required level of English on embarking on this course and is prepared to invest time and effort in all aspects of the subject. The successful completion of this course provides the student with the necessary requirements to continue with a depth philological study of the English language, as well as providing a stepping stone for future study towards Proficiency examinations.
