SUMMARY
Previous knowledge and recommendations
Students are recommended to carefully read at home the texts to be analysed in the classroom. It is also important to read texts in English on a daily basis: from literary texts to journal articles, essays and other relevant documents in order to improve their vocabulary, reading comprehension and critical thinking abilities. Students with special educational needs must personally contact the Students' Attention Service so that pertinent curricular adaptations can be made.
Brief summary of the course
La asignatura incluirá un recorrido genérico de la historia de la literatura inglesaen lengua inglesa, centrándose en las principales etapas de la misma y en los autores más relevantes. El periodo que cubrirá será desde la etapa del Inglés Antiguo (siglo VIII) hasta el presente(Literatura inglesa) y desde el siglo XVI hasta el presente (Literatura norteamericana), por esta razón está concebido como un curso introductorio. Se incluirá un breve dossier de lecturas escogidas que se corresponderán con los temas teóricos estudiados.

Theoretical contents include an overview of the history of literature in the English language, focusing on a brief analysis of its main periods (from the point of view of its cultural, aesthetic and sociopolitical signification) as well as of their more relevant authors and authoress.

TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND FORMATIVE ACTIVITIES
Additional information
Lectures will be devoted to the analysis of the historical, social and cultural background of the chosen authors and works. Recommended bibliographical material, as well as documents uploaded to the virtual space of the subject, will be used in the lectures. Practical sessions will focus on the reading and analysis of the selected works. Students must read and study these texts before the practical sessions. They should also be prepared to discuss them with the teacher and their classmates. Special attention will be paid to the students' active involvement and participation.
Teaching methodologies

The subject will revolve around active learning methodologies, focusing on flipped classroom techniques, autonomous work and collaborative learning in the practical sessions. Special attention will be paid to the application of critical thinking abilities to the analysis and discussion of literary texts, as well as to the students' creativity and originality in the elaboration of essays and tasks about them.

ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY
Assesment systems (specific)
  • S1. Attendance and participation: 15% [students' involvement and active participation in both the theoretical and practical sessions].
  • S2. Final written exam: 60%, where the following aspects will be evaluated: a) students' knowledge of literature in English, from the beginnings till the contemporary age (short questions and essay-like questions); b) identification of the most relevant works and authors; and c) literary commentaries on a selection of texts
  • S3. Two written tests on two contemporary novels: 25%

In the resit exam of July (Extraordinaria II) the final exam will account for 100% of the qualification.

Additional information
Sustainable Development Goals 5, 10 and 16 will be activated through the analysis and discussion of the contribution of literary texts to the construction of fairer and more inclusive and egalitarian societies in different historical periods, paying special attention to the visibilization and re-signification of those works by women writers which have traditionally been silenced or left behind. Concerning SDG 4, our teaching-learning scenario will encourage the exercise of critical-thinking abilities and transference competencies that go beyond mere academicism and are essential for the students' social development: creativity, adaptability, awareness and action. Finally, and bearing in mind the work dynamics recommended by SDG 17, the lessons will foster the creation of alliances (team work) by jointly constructing knowledge and designing intervention proposals (service learning) to ameliorate the extra-academic reality.

Purpose: In accordance with the Universities Law and other national and regional regulations in force, carrying out exams and assessment tests corresponding to the courses students are registered in. In order to avoid frauds while sitting the exam, the exam will be answered using a videoconference system, being able the academic staff of the University of Jaén to compare and contrast the image of the person who is answering the exam with the student's photographic files. Likewise, in order to provide the exam with evidential content for revisions or claims, in accordance with current regulation frameworks, the exam will be recorded and stored.

Legitimacy: compliance with legal obligations (Universities Law) and other national and regional regulations currently in force.

Addressees: service providers who are the owners of the platforms where the exams are carried out and with whom the University of Jaén has signed the corresponding data access contracts.

Storage periods: those established in current in force regulations. In the specific case of exam videoconference recordings, not before the examination records and transcripts are closed or the exam can still be reviewed or challenged.
